Metal Décor: The basics
Metal décor or decorative metal works are simply decorations made with metal. They have a distinct classy appeal that makes them versatile and outstanding. One may even refer to that quality as “edginess.” Metal is a material that when properly harnessed and polished can be a great conductor of electricity and heat. Most importantly, metal is durable and malleable. This is why it is often a choice for building as it lasts a long time and it is extremely strong. Metal doesn’t always have to be industrial in nature; it can be purely decorative in nature. Items that are made with metal and decorative in nature are called metal décors.
Metal has come a long way from its origin. It has been used for armor, sculpture, structure, machinery, and weapons amongst others. In fact, it is still being used for most of these purposes. Metal never really goes out of fashion or out of style because it is a reliable material. Look around you; there is metal somewhere. There are several ways metal can be embedded into decorations for your home or office layout. These ways are further classified into two main groups.
- Functional – Metal is a very useful material; therefore, we seldom see it is a material to be used for just decoration but as we earlier discussed it doesn’t always have to be this way. Your metal decor can also be functional. You can see this in metal clocks, metal frames, prints and even as large as the gates of a building. These are all avenues for self-expression. Even though these things are functional, there is no rule that states that they must not be pleasing to the eye. Architecture, for instance, is a job that involves designing houses. Architects may as well design simple houses that only perform one function, and that is to house people, but architects such as Frank Gehry pushed further away from that and designed practical and beautiful buildings. Functional metal decoration is the same.
- Art for Art’s sake – These are items that do not serve any other functional purpose other than sprucing up your space and adding a touch of identity or in some cases, culture. But even these items serve a function, and that is to beautify or to evoke an emotion. Imagine having a small sculpture of your family or a pet. This does not have any practical day to day use, but it is still important and functional.
